AWARDS & ACCREDITATION

The Portrait Masters

2019 / 2020

Entering my work to be critiqued is not something I ever thought I would do in my lifetime. Just the thought of it would make me basically want to vomit. What if they don’t like it? What if I’m not good enough? What if I don’t get an award? were just the few questions I would ask myself. These were my ‘blocks’ and these blocks could have potentially stopped me from moving forward and growing into the photographer I am today and also, dream to be.

For the last two years I submitted some of my images - my best work - which also happened to be my client work. Meaning most of these images, bar a couple, have been produced for my clients. What you see on my website is my best work.

I’m constantly striving to do better creatively. I believe for me to do better in this competition or any photography competition for that matter, is to start producing work that comes from deep within me, a piece of art that resonates with me. Something that is far beyond anything that I could ever imagine creating. This maybe something that the client might ask for, but more often than not it may be a little ‘over the top’ for my clients. The editing for example would go far beyond how I would normally edit for a client. I guess that’s what makes it more a ‘creative piece’ or ‘work of art’ rather than a beautiful portrait that really replicates that person captured.

Someone once said something along the lines of

a designer does not put their work that appears in the shops up on the runway - they put their very best creative work forward and 9 times out of 10 it’s probably not something you’d wear down the street or out for dinner.’

I can’t for the life of me think of where I heard or read this but it sure was a ‘lightbulb’ moment for me, even more so after viewing the top twenty in each of the categories . The work of those photographers blew.my.mind. If you’re interested, take a look, I’d love to know what you think (July 2019 - July 2020) after viewing you’ll have a better understanding of why the line above was a lightbulb moment for me.

I hope to really bring something special too the Portrait Masters Awards this year. I feel it’s healthy for us in general to have something we strive towards in order to push ourselves for greater things, - otherwise we can become a little complacent, can’t we? Setting yourself challenges can be so rewarding!
